It doesn’t seem like there will be many port announcements.
When it was first released, the Sony PlayStation VR headset was a huge success. This was a great way to try VR for a low price, and there were many games available. Sony is now expanding its VR offerings and is releasing the second iteration. Sony’s PlayStation VR2 is set to launch in early 2023, but don’t pick this device up if you want to play past VR games.
Sony will release the PlayStation VR2 headset, but it won’t allow you to play any VR games. It’s all due to the company’s technological advancements on the headset. As a result, there doesn’t appear to be any efforts to ensure past games will run on the new VR hardware. To make things even bleaker for your original PlayStation VR game collection, ports won’t be easy. Hideaki Nishino is the senior vice president for platform experience at Sony. Interview with FamitsuThe person commented on the coming PlayStation VR2 release.
Hideaki Nishino stated that the company invested a lot in new controller tracking and foveate render. This technology tracks your eyes and provides a better view of the displays. This system is very different from the original hardware released by Sony for the PlayStation VR. Hideaki adds that porting to this hardware will be difficult for developers.
With that said, it’s also said that porting won’t be impossible. Developers will have to look at the games closely. The developers must decide if they feel the ports are worthwhile. So if it comes down to spending more resources on a game that might not have very many adopters upon its release, then odds are we won’t get the game port. Of course, with the new hardware and hyped-up features that Sony hopes you’ll take up with, there are bound to be plenty of new thrilling releases to enjoy.
For now, we’ll have to wait for the official PlayStation VR2 headset to make its way into the marketplace. The headset will be available for purchase in early 2023, according to the latest information. Players can purchase a headset for $549.99 on February 22, 2023.
