I always try to say the words in a single attempt. One day I will. I’ve come to believe this is the true point of the game.
To me, typing ADIEU or whatever every morning is like the infield shift that was recently banned in baseball. It is effective, but it is not in the spirit of things.
The number of guesses it takes after the first one, then, doesn’t mean too much to me. It’s a real go-big-or-go-home type of situation, in this way.
I let the universe speak to me. I think about the fried chicken sandwich I’m eating. It tastes great. I type AIOLI.
Strategizing, calculating odds, thinking things through in an intelligent or thoughtful way — these are concepts I respect but personally have little use for. I don’t love board games. Poker is a game of vibes (and I’m always losing). I’ve never touched a Sudoku.
So failing to hit on the first guess is deflating, and thereafter it’s all about getting through it as quickly as possible.
My phone screen transforms into a tiny Ouija Board and I use my thumbs to move two small planchettes unconsciously along the length of letters. OWNER pops out.
Now I’m the soccer legend Lionel Messi (another sports reference from this sportswriter) dribbling headlong into trouble, no need to stop and think, assuming I’ll find a way through. I hit the FOUND button without thinking and am rewarded by four green tiles.
What’s left? Let’s pause and consider the blank square. It’s definitely not SOUND, and, let’s be honest, there’s no way it’s BOUND. I choose HOUND which, of course, is correct. Wordle words include some words. Wordle has a certain je ne sais quoi with HOUND.
This is the only one-star review I can give. The name should have been AIOLI.

In an interview with Wired, she said, “I like to think of illustrative style as just our natural flaws shining through and doing the best with it.”
