When you’re playing Minecraft online, whether its with your friends or on a public server, the first thing you’ll notice is that everyone has their username on top of their head. This includes you. So if you no don’t like yours for whatever reason, be it that it’s no longer to your liking or it’s outdated, or even if you had no idea that’s what it was, there’s way to change it to something more appropriate for you.
You should know that there are actually two versions of Minecraft and each platform is compatible with one of them.
- Bedrock The version of the game on Xbox, PlayStations, Nintendo, IOS and Android. PC users can choose this game, since it allows cross-play.
- Minecraft: Java Edition The only way Mac users or Linux users can play this game is through the Mac version. It does not have crossplay, but it still has coop.
How to change your Minecraft Java Edition username
- Log in to your Microsoft account and visit the official Minecraft site.
- Once logged in, click on the “My Games” tab
- Click on the “Minecraft: Java Edition” icon
- Select the “Profile Name” option
- Enter your new username, and click on “Change Profile Name”

Minecraft Bedrock has a unique feature in that it requires you to link the game with a Microsoft Account to access online multiplayer. You can play some games offline, such as on consoles or mobile devices. in those cases, you only need to change your name in the game’s settings. For PlayStation, your name will always match your PSN name, while on Nintendo Switch it’ll match your console’s profile name.

- Log in to your Microsoft account by visiting the Xbox website.
- You can now access your Xbox Profile.
- Click the “Customize” option under your name
- Click on the pencil icon to edit your username
- Enter the name you want to change it to, and click on “Check Availability”
- If no one else has that name, it’ll change automatically. Otherwise it’ll prompt you to enter a different one.
