It’s been no secret that PlayStation has been ramping up its live service efforts after having acquired three different studios dedicated to this specific genre. In 2022, after purchasing Destiny’s developer Bungie, the Japanese gaming giants acquired two additional companies: Haven Studios and Firewalk Studios. Both are made up of Bungie veterans.
After initially stating that they already have ten live-service games currently in development, PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst was keen to mention in a GamesIndustry.biz interview that this “doesn’t automatically mean the company is making ten Fortnites or Destinys.” Instead, they’ll be “making a variety of games” that are “targeting different genres, different release schedules, and at different scales.”
Hulst also noted that the team takes confidence from their “track record in creating worlds and stories that PlayStation fans love.” This should come as good news to Sony loyalists who have long been used to the immersive environments and plots of past AAA installments. For those troubled by this sudden change in strategy, however, there’s still no need to worry as there are plenty of single-player projects currently being worked on at PlayStation, such as the long-awaited Wolverine game.
In addition to the types of games they’ll be releasing, it’s also been revealed that the Firewalk Studios-led project will seemingly not be a PlayStation exclusive. It will be released on PCs as well, since desktops have been one of most popular markets for live-service games. It’s currently unclear, though, whether the other projects are similarly going to be released for Windows as PlayStation Studios is yet to provide any concrete details on their release strategy.
With that said, it’s starting to look like a new PlayStation era is set to arrive soon with the impending release of these live service games. Only time will tell whether these projects are successful.
