Following the UK Competition and Markets Authority decision, Xbox’s new acquisition of Activision remains a hot issue. [CMA] Andrew Andrew, the CEO of Electronic Arts, doesn’t appear to be too concerned about whether or not this deal goes through.
Wilson claimed that EA, in a recent earnings call, was “Microsoft’s largest partner” and “the top publisher on Microsoft’s platform.”
Wilson concluded, “So it doesn’t really matter to us whether or not that deal is completed.” “We believe that we have enough scale, again going back to our IP, our talent and our network, to continue to lead and navigate the future of entertainment, compete in a market regardless of whether this deal goes through, or not.”
Wilson, when asked about the trend of consolidation in the industry as a whole, said that he would like to see EA “have the size to be a significant consolidator.”
I think that we have a lot of assets in the future entertainment. We don’t really care if it happens. Wilson said, “We think we have a brilliant strategy, and we feel that we have a tremendous opportunity. We’ll be the top publisher on Microsoft Platform whether this goes through or doesn’t.”
“
Wilson’s remarks come amid ongoing speculation that EA could be acquired. Comcast approached EA but the deal collapsed due to disagreements about price and structure. EA is still in a good position, and FIFA 23 was the largest launch ever in franchise history.
Xbox is also continuing to fight against the acquisition of Activision Blizzard, which was heavily questioned both by the CMA as well as the Federal Trade Commission. [FTC]. Activision Blizzard even hired a former Queen Elizabeth II lawyer to fight the case. See the timeline for this case.
