Epic Games is expanding Fall Guys — its bubbly battle royale populated by little jellybean dudes — to make room for player-crafted creativity.
Fall Guys’ fourth season is now live. It features a new creative mode, which allows players to create their own levels using beginner-friendly tools. Anyone can design new gauntlets for obstacle courses, complete with giant boxing gloves, bouncy flooring, and candy-colored hammers. The goal is to crush the avatars of the player characters.
Fall Guys, Epic’s new multiplayer game, sits next to Fortnite. The chaotic gameplay is a departure from the core hit of Epic. Fall Guys, unlike Fortnite, which is a more traditional, but wacky, shooter, offers a battle to the death on a series colorful cartoon courses that are strewn by hazards.
Epic has proven that its formula is winning by transforming other titles like Fortnite into different-flavored versions. Epic’s recipe continues to be refined with the free-to-play battle pass model, cosmetic purchases in-game and a wide range of tools that allow players to create their own levels.
Epic has a lot of faith in the original content created by players, also called “UGC” or user-generated material. Fortnite players are often found in the game’s world of user-created levels and game modes. Epic announced, in March, that it was bringing its Unreal editor to Fortnite. This promised to improve graphics and gameplay beyond anything else currently available to amateur game developers.
Along with that news, Epic announced that it would share 40 percent of Fortnite revenue with anyone making UGC for Fortnite — a big departure from the game’s scant existing monetization options. Epic is creating a seamless multiplayer universe with a wealth of player-created content and virtual goods. Roblox is a younger competitor who is building the same future for online multiplayer gaming, digital goods and shoppable content.).
Fall Guys was released on Xbox and Nintendo Switch last year. It is now available almost anywhere that you can play video games. The game isn’t available on mobile devices yet, just as Fortnite isn’t either after Epic’s dispute with Apple about Apple’s hefty cut of in app payments. If you are really determined to run Fortnite on iOS, there is a cloud gaming solution.
Epic purchased Mediatonic, the creator of Fall Guys in early 2021. The purchase took place six months after Twitch saw the game explode, with 100 million streaming minutes in August of that year. This acquisition came after Epic purchased indie developer Psyonix for $500,000 back in 2019. The company then added the popular soccer/racing game Rocket League to its online multiplayer titles.
