Google announced during the Google I/O 2023 Developer Keynote a new surprise software project. The company began the project by trying to assist a gamer who was having a difficult time with a particular issue.
Lance Carr is a Colorado PC gamer who has a rare type of muscular dystrophy. He can’t move much but playing PC games such as World of Warcraft It allows him to stay connected to the outside world. Carr’s house was destroyed in a fire that also destroyed his adaptive accessories needed to play PC Games.
Google’s team worked with Carr to develop a program called Project GameFace. Carr was able to control all of his PC accessories with just facial expressions. With the software, he can virtually sign his name. The best part is that it works with a standard webcam.
Google decided to release Project GameFace, a facial recognition software as an open-source project. Anyone can download it and contribute to its development and improvement. Download the source code on GitHub.
