Cult of the Lamb Starter Guide
Our Cult of the Lamb The Starter Guide will guide you through the basics of the colony sim and dungeon crawler aspects of this game. Let’s get to it!
Getting Started
Your adventure begins in a very unfortunate situation: you are the last lamb alive, and you have been captured by the evil Bishops. You are not yet dead when the executioner’s axe strikes your head.
A fifth dark god known by the name The One Who Waits has been imprisoned. He implores you help him — he will give you the power of fighting and you will set up a cult to his name.
Moving on to the Cult
The Cult of Lamb’s titular Cult is hidden in a grove which serves as your base of operations. You’ll initially only have one follower and a handful buildings, but you’ll soon have an entire infrastructure.
Once you are in the Cult, there will be a lot more trees, rocks, berry bushes. You can break them down if you want, but you don’t need to. Instead, you can ask your Followers to do it while they’re out adventuring in other parts of the world.
No matter what you choose to do, you will have to go out into the wider world. It’s time to head for Darkwood.
Darkwood is your place
“Blood of the Covenant” is your first Quest. This will be your first mission with the Cult. There are only a few objectives.
- Return to the Lands of the Old Faith
- Return with more Gold Coins
- Return with more followers
If you’re lucky, you can complete all three objectives in one run. As long as you know what to look for, you can also complete them all in one go.
After you’ve completed all the tutorials and indoctrinated your Follower, move north from the Cult into the dark. You will find five portals in the area, with a large stone statue at its center. Interact with the statue to open the first portal into Darkwood.
We’ll get to Darkwood shortly — first, let’s talk Hearts.
How Hearts Work Cult of the Lamb
There are four types in Hearts Cult of the Lamb As shown in the above image. Each Heart type behaves differently so it is important to understand how they work in order to survive.
- Red Hearts – Red Hearts signify your natural health. These are your natural health and you will always have them. These can be cured by collecting Red Heart Pickups while adventuring through the dungeons.
- Temporary Red Hearts: Red Hearts with a yellow border are temporary and will not last beyond the current run. However, they can be restored with Red Heart pickups and treated as normal Red Hearts.
- Blue Hearts – Blue Hearts are temporary and temporary health. Once they are gone, they can’t be regained. These are only good for the duration of the race.
- Black Hearts/Diseased Hearts – Diseased Hearts can also be temporary health. However, taking damage to a Diseased Heart can cause damage to all enemies.
Darkwood: Entering Darkwood
Your first major task will consist of running one complete Darkwood Run, earning Coins and bringing Back Followers.
You can earn coins by clearing rooms. Each Chest that you open will give you a few coins. You can find followers at certain locations on the map and by defeating Bosses.
You can equip your weapon
Each time you start a new adventure, you will be given a random weapon. You won’t be able to choose the weapon you get.
Feel free to experiment with the weapons you prefer. After defeating the first boss, the Cult will allow you to return at your leisure. For now you’ll have the option to use whatever weapon you’re given.
You don’t have all the options. You might be able to get a new weapon from one of these rooms. As you will see in our Cult of the Lamb Guides and randomness are a major factor in the game so you should get used to them.
Darkwood Exploration
The tutorial will continue into your first run in Darkwood. As you move from room to room, clearing enemies and collecting loot, your first run in Darkwood will feel like an extension of the tutorial.
Make sure to cut down every Grass in every room. Grass can be a valuable resource, so you’ll want as much as possible.
Your First Tarot Card
One of the rooms that you will encounter has a red-clad bird. Clauneck will be your best friend.
Tarot Cards are temporary buffs that last for the entire run. They can give you extra Hearts, new abilities, and other benefits that will make running easier. You’ll usually find them in Clauneck’s room, but you can also find Tarot cards in chests or other special rooms.
Clear the entire area and you will receive a chest. After clearing the first area, you will need to go through a portal to continue.
Navigating the Map
After completing the first zone, you’ll find a portal and a mapping.
This map shows the route you will take to get there. You can only follow the lines and cannot go backward so you may miss some of these areas on your journey to the boss at the end.
Choose the best route and move towards the boss.
Fighting Your First Boss – Amdusias
Your first boss will eventually be Amdusias. Amdusias is relatively easy to attack.
- Amdusias will make a charge at you.
- Amdusias will summon his enemies to help him.
- Amdusias can fire projectiles into the air, much like artillery.
You can defeat Amdusias by doing as much damage as possible and avoiding his attacks. Once defeated, Convert him and teleport to your cult.
Next, you will be presented with three random rewards. You can choose the one that appeals to you most. Once you have made your choice, a large chest will appear and you’ll receive a lot of Coins.
Continue to the next room and you will find a locked door with a circular circle around it. The circle will only fill in about a quarter of the way. You will need two more runs to challenge Leshy the Bishop of Darkwood.
Returning to the Cult
To return to the Cult, use the pentagram circle. A post-run summary will show you all the goodies that you have earned.
The One Who Waits will give a brief pep talk. After that, he’ll take you back to the mortal realm. You’ll be back at Cult.
Amdusias can be found in the small circle to the right of Cult. You can Indoctrinate him, and then put him to work. Ratau will then instruct to you to build the Shrine
The Shrine and Devotion
The Shrine is…well, it’s a shrine. If you ask them to pray here, they will generate Devotion that can unlock Buildings.
Interacting with the Shrine will allow you to collect Devotion as well as a Divine Inspiring to unlock your next Building, the Temple.
Do not build the Temple yet
The Temple is undoubtedly the heart of your Cult. It can be used for Sermons and Rituals, deciding Doctrine or improving the Red Crown or your Fleece.
Do not start construction on the Temple. Once it is completed, the Faith mechanic will be activated. Instead, you can clear land, gather resources like Wood and Stone and unlock some Buildings.
Whatever you choose, you will have to eventually build the Temple and hold your first Sermon.
Your First Sermon
Now you can hold your first Sermon with the Temple open. This accomplishes two things.
- Faith builds up in your followers
- To unlock new Weapons or Curses, draw power from your Followers.
Then you will be told that Commandment Stone Fragments are required. It’s time for Darkwood.
Curses and Fervour
Return to Darkwood and start your run as usual. Ratau will be visiting you in a few rooms and give you the power to Curses.
Curses are your ranged ability, and they offer more variety than melee weapon options.
Your arsenal is now complete, more or less, with the addition Curses. Continue to fight.
Fragments of Commandment Stone
As you move through your second run you’ll come across a mysterious creature as well as some busted rocks. These stones are Commandment Stone Fragments.
To declare a Doctrine (a powerful passive buff to your Cult), you will need 3 Commandment stone Fragments. These buffs can make a huge difference in your game. Make sure to carefully consider your options. Check out our Doctrine Guide for more information.
Keep going and you’ll meet another boss. You can win this battle, and then you can return home.
He is a Mind Reader
After killing your second boss The One Who Waits will grant you the “Read Mind” Follower Command.
Mind Reader allows to view the status of individual followers and allows you address their needs. It’s very handy and it costs nothing to use.
Declaring Doctrine
Ratau will direct you to go into a temple and declare a Doctrine once you return home. Your first Doctrine will be automatically chosen and you will have access to the Bonfire Ritual, which is a secondary way to increase Faith in your Cult.
Unfortunately, the Bonfire Ritual needs Bones so you’ll need to go back into Darkforest.
Your Adventure Continues
From here, the game is quite simple. You will need to increase your Followers while keeping your existing followers fed, housed, and faithful. You should ensure that everyone has a bed and enough food. Also, perform Sermons, Rituals, and other duties.
There are still a few Quests to complete. Check out our Quest Guide to learn more.
There is a huge difference between caring about a couple of Cult members, and having 10, 15, or even 20 Followers. You’ll need to learn how to Farm and fish to supplement your Food income.
You have much more to explore. See our other offerings. Cult of the Lamb Guides to learn more about the game. Have fun and good luck!
