Square Enix’s HD-2D ROPG Octopath Traveler II was released in February. It brought the series to PlayStation consoles, but a new interview has revealed that the production team may have considered giving the original series creator a PlayStation release.
The original Octopath Traveler was exclusively released for the Nintendo Switch in August 2018. It brings eight different character-driven fantasy storylines to JRPG gamers around the globe. The game was released on PC in June 2019, and Xbox One in March 2020. However, it has never been released on any PlayStation console. This is in contrast to its sequel which was released simultaneously for Switch and PC for PlayStation 5 and Playstation 4.
Masashi Takahashi now says that the production team considered porting Octopath Traveler to PlayStation Consoles during the time Octopth Traveler 2 was about to launch. In a Sunday interview, Takahashi explained to PushSquare that they decided not to make this move and instead focused their efforts on developing the sequel.
PlayStaion gamers have yet to get their hands on Octopath Traveler 2, but Takahashi stated that it is not necessary to have played the original series. Both games have a lot in common, including their graphics, secondary class system and eight stories that are broken down into chapters. However, they take place in entirely different worlds. The producer stated that the game is about traveling and enjoying the journey. “We felt it was important to place the game in a new world to give the player excitement and anticipation as they explore it, wonder what the next step will be or who might be living there.
Takahashi elaborated on the reasons for the completely different setting. He said that developers knew that not everyone would have played the original game. Furthermore, five years has passed since its release and many people who did have the opportunity to play the original would have lost some of the story elements. Octopath Traveler 2 does not include any references to characters or stories from the original game. He said, “So, I can confidently state that both fans and new players of Octopath Traveler II will enjoy its content without having to worry about previous events.”
