Since Microsoft announced its intention to purchase Activision Blizzard at a record-breaking price, the Xbox and PlayStation battle has been tense. Sony’s concern has been raised by the prospect that Call of Duty (a major PlayStation series) will be an Xbox console exclusive in future.
Phil Spencer, Xbox head, has repeatedly talked about how he plans to honour past deals between Activision & Sony. He even plans to continue to sell Call of Duty to the platform if the deal is complete, despite Sony not being happy about it.
Spencer joined the Decoder podcast to discuss the matter.
It’s not that at some point I drag the rug under PlayStation 7’s legs. There is no contract that can be written that promises forever.
“The idea that we would create a contract that said the word forever in it, I think, is silly. But to make a longer term commitment that Sony would feel comfortable with, regulators wouldn’t be uncomfortable with, I have no problem with that.”
Although this statement does not deny or discredit the possibility that Call of Duty might one day become an Xbox exclusive title, it is likely to be years in the future.
