According to Jason Schreier of Bloomberg, the development of the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake has been moved from Aspyr Media (a Texas-based studio) to one of Saber Interactive’s Eastern European developers. The original game was first announced in September 2021. There was much excitement and hope that the remake would retain the essence of the 2003 title. The game was delayed until July 2022 when we heard virtually nothing.
Why was the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake delayed?
In June 2022, Aspyr Media fired Jason Minor (the former art director) and Brad Prince (the former design director). This led to an indefinite delay at the beginning of July 2022. The following was reported back then: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Aspyr Media was placed on a pause. Aspyr Media stated that they needed “new contracts, development opportunities,” to funnel money into the company. KotOR remake. This dream, after two years of development is apparently dead. The hopes and dreams of KotOR Saber Interactive has placed fans in their hands.
It is important to mention that Embracer Group, which has both Aspyr Interactive and Saber Interactive, moved this project from one developer to the next under its umbrella. Embracer is a large company and was able to locate another developer in less than a month.
Last Thursday, Embracer mentioned in a financial report that “one of the Group’s AAA projects has transitioned to another studio within the Group.” Embracer wasn’t satisfied with the title’s overall quality, and Embracer said that the “quality level” was not up to their standards. While there are no expected “material delays”, gamers shouldn’t be surprised that the game has yet to be released. The group does not clarify what it means. Knights of the Old RepublicIt’s possible that it is, given Schreier’s reporting and our current knowledge about the status of the remake,
Saber Interactive is a multi-faceted company that has a lot of experience in developing software. They have also developed an off-road driving simulator SnowRunner, popular co-op zombie shooter World War ZAnd WWE 2K BattlegroundsJust to name a few. There is nothing that screams AAARPG, but Aspyr Media didn’t have any. We’ll see. It’s important to note that Aspyr has supervised both ports and re-releases. Knights of the Old Republic It has a past history in this area, as can its sequel. If Bloomberg’s reports are correct, it’ll be interesting for Saber Interactive to do with the property.
Thanks, Bloomberg.
