Square Enix is not like other video game publishers such as Electronic Arts and Take-Two. It doesn’t feel that it must release every game across every platform. Square Enix uses a different definition to multi-platform. Rather than launching their games on every platform, Square Enix chooses the best one for them based on several factors such as total installed base and mass-market appeal. It also considers which platform-holders will pay more.
Square Enix often signs exclusivity agreements to lock down the PlayStation’s biggest-hitting games. Some recent Square Enix games have been unable to be released on Xbox. These include Final Fantasy 7 Remake (which cannot be made available to Xbox) and Final Fantasy 16 (which may also not be available to Xbox). Square Enix will sign deals with both Nintendo, and PlayStation simultaneously. Octopath Traveler II, for instance, isn’t available on Xbox.
Square Enix’s presence is not nonexistent on Xbox, however. The publisher also released the Chrono cross remaster, Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origins and Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion on Xbox. Square Enix also released the DioFIELD Chronicle for Xbox. Not to be forgotten, Kingdom Hearts is available on Xbox and there are a few Xbox Game Pass titles like Dragon Quest Builders 2.
Square Enix’s executives have made some comments about this. Square Enix’s management stated that they will continue to follow their current strategy. Square Enix has not stated that it will be making more exclusive deals. However, this is what Square Enix is doing currently, so we can expect that it will continue.
Here’s a quick Q&A excerpt from the firm’s Recent 9-month earnings report:
Q: What platform strategy are you using for your upcoming titles?
A: We plan to keep the multi-platform strategy we have used to this point.
According to the company, it has more games in development than could be included in this release structure. This includes Final Fantasy 16, which was confirmed as a PlayStation Exclusive for the first six month.
