Shawn Layden, former PlayStation boss, has made his next move. To become a strategic adviser, he recently joined Tencent, a Chinese technology company that is the largest gaming company in the world. The announcement was made via LinkedIn (via VGC).
Layden stated, “In my new role, I hope advise, assist and support the Tencent team as they deepen activities and commitments in the industry to which i’ve devoted most of my career.” We are in a moment of greatness in interactive entertainment and gaming. There are many paths to go, but only a few are deep, broadening. inclusive. edifying. inspirational. And/or sustainable. Tencent gave me the opportunity to continue on this exciting journey of discovery.
Layden joined PlayStation in 1996. After working his way up, he became the chairman of SIE Worldwide Studios. Layden left the company in 2019. Layden, in addition to Tencent is a strategic advisor for Streamline Media Group. This group helps “transport brands into he metaverse.”
According to Phil Spencer, Microsoft’s Phil Spencer, Tencent is today the world’s largest gaming company, surpassing Xbox and PlayStation.
Tencent has invested in Epic, Activision Blizzard and Ubisoft. It is also creating its own western studios. The company recently established a new outfit that was headed by former Battlefield, Star Wars, Halo and Halo employees.
PlayStation: A report recently stated that a hardware revision will be coming with a detached drive.
